Quigley and her brother Hansel were born to a breeder in Texas but were surrendered almost immediately due to their cleft palates. While cleft palate puppies require extra care during their early weeks, they can grow into healthy, happy dogs with the right support.

Thankfully, the pair was quickly rescued by Mac’s Mission, a Missouri-based organization specializing in special needs dogs, with extensive experience helping cleft palate puppies thrive.

“Most breeders cull them, and many vets recommend euthanasia, thinking they can’t survive,” said Rochelle Steffen, founder of Mac’s Mission, in an interview with The Dodo. “We’re working hard to change this mentality because these special pups can live full, happy lives when cared for by experienced hands. Time and proper feeding techniques are crucial since they are prone to aspirating if not handled correctly.”

Although Mac’s Mission operates out of Missouri, several states away from Quigley’s foster home, Steffen knew from the moment she saw Quigley’s photo that she couldn’t let this little pup go.
“She’s a burrito-sized bulldozer with an incredible personality and will absolutely be the life of any party,” Steffen said. “She makes these adorable wombat-gremlin sounds that I’ve never heard before, and she brings a smile to everyone’s face. I took her to the lumber store, and even the toughest construction workers melted at the sight of her. She has that magic.”

Steffen, who fosters many rescue dogs in addition to caring for her own pets, quickly realized Quigley was special. The little pup wasn’t just a temporary foster—she was home for good. Even better, her new big brother, Mac, was just as thrilled.
Mac, the inspiration behind Mac’s Mission, joined Steffen’s family as a rescue puppy at 3 months old. Despite facing significant medical challenges and undergoing six major surgeries in his seven years of life, Mac has become a vital part of the rescue. Known for his gentle nature, he has helped countless special needs puppies adjust and heal. This time, however, Mac gained more than a temporary charge—he gained a little sister.

“Mac has a unique sense when it comes to puppies,” Steffen said. “It’s like he knows they need our help. He’s incredibly patient and loves meeting new rescues. He won’t leave me alone until he gets to do the sniff test.”
From the moment Mac met Quigley, it was clear they were meant to be friends. Their bond quickly grew, and now they’re inseparable.
Quigley adores Mac just as much as he adores her, and she loves playing with her new siblings. “She follows them around like they hung the moon,” Steffen said.

While Quigley faces some challenges due to her cleft palate, such as difficulties with eating and drinking, she is making progress every day. She doesn’t seem to notice she’s any different from other dogs, embracing life with enthusiasm. Whether it’s snuggling, playing, or making new friends, Quigley is enjoying every moment of her new life.
Despite her differences, Quigley has proven to be a wonderful companion, defying misconceptions that special needs pups can’t make great pets. Thanks to a family who loves her unconditionally, Quigley is thriving and bringing joy to everyone she meets.

Her story is a testament to the transformative power of love and acceptance—and a reminder that every dog deserves a chance to shine.
