On a rainy day in Kingsport, Tennessee, a lone dog wandered onto a busy highway, braving the downpour and the dangers of speeding cars.
The relentless rain and strong winds blurred drivers’ vision, making the situation even more perilous for the dog. Yet, thanks to the sharp instincts and quick response of one individual, the dog’s life was saved.
Highway Patrol Officer Lance Willis was the hero of the day. As he drove along the highway, he spotted what looked like “some kind of animal” in the middle of the road. Upon closer inspection, he realized it was a brown German shepherd, frightened and in harm’s way.

“There were cars stopped in both lanes,” Trooper Willis shared in a video interview on the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s Facebook page. “I turned on my blue lights because people usually stop when they see them. Then, I radioed in to let everyone know my location.”
Braving the rain, Willis exited his vehicle and gently coaxed the dog toward him. A video captures the heartwarming moment: the dog, later identified as a beloved pet named Luna, cautiously made her way across the wet highway. Willis opened his car door, and Luna hopped inside without hesitation.
“We focus on traffic safety,” Willis said, “but sometimes, we also rescue dogs from the roadway.”

Luna’s story didn’t end there. Petworks Animal Services, a local nonprofit shelter, stepped in to help reunite her with her owner.
“Luna is home safe with her family,” a spokesperson for Petworks shared with News Channel 11.
For Trooper Willis, knowing Luna made it back to her family was the ultimate reward. “That’s all I hoped for,” he said.
